Description

The Crown of Thorns, commonly referring to Euphorbia milii, is a striking member of the Euphorbia genus known for its spiny stems and colorful, petal-like bracts that surround small, inconspicuous flowers. Native to Madagascar, this drought-tolerant succulent has adapted well to a variety of climates and is popular as a houseplant or landscape specimen in tropical and subtropical regions. The plant gets its name from the legend that its thorny stems were used to make the crown placed on Christ’s head. It blooms almost year-round when given sufficient sunlight and well-draining soil. The flowers come in a range of colors, including red, pink, yellow, and white, adding vivid beauty to gardens or indoor spaces. However, caution is needed when handling Crown of Thorns—its white, milky latex sap can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested by humans or pets. Despite this, its low water needs and vibrant flowers make it a resilient, eye-catching addition to arid or xeriscape gardens.
