Description

Croton (Codiaeum variegatum) is a striking tropical shrub native to Southeast Asia and the western Pacific. It is best known for its vividly colored, leathery leaves, which can display an array of bright hues—reds, yellows, oranges, greens, and purples—often all on the same plant. The leaves vary in shape, ranging from narrow and twisted to broad and oval, and are marked with bold veins or spots that enhance their ornamental appeal. In the landscape, crotons are often used as accent plants or hedges in tropical and subtropical regions, where they can grow 3 to 8 feet tall. They also thrive as container plants or indoor houseplants in bright, indirect light. Though crotons are relatively low-maintenance, they do require warmth, high humidity, and consistent moisture to maintain their vibrant coloration. They are sensitive to cold and can drop their leaves if exposed to sudden temperature changes or drought. With proper care, however, crotons add a vivid, almost painterly touch to gardens and interiors alike. Their dramatic foliage and exotic flair make them a standout choice for gardeners looking to introduce bold color and texture to their plantings.
