Description
Cordia sebestena, commonly referred to as the Cordia Tree, Geiger Tree, or Scarlet Cordia, is a striking tropical and subtropical evergreen tree admired for its large, bright orange to scarlet trumpet-shaped flowers. Native to the Caribbean and coastal areas of the Americas, it typically grows up to 25 feet tall, forming a rounded, dense canopy. The tree features broad, coarse, dark green leaves that contrast beautifully with its vivid blooms, which appear year-round in warm climates. Highly tolerant of salty, sandy soils and drought once established, it is ideal for coastal planting and is commonly used in gardens, parks, and as a street tree. The Cordia Tree also attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees, contributing to the biodiversity of the landscape. In addition to its ornamental value, its wood has been used traditionally for carving and small tools. Though relatively low-maintenance, it prefers full sun and good drainage to thrive.
