Description

The Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) is a unique and ornamental palm native to the Mascarene Islands, particularly Round Island near Mauritius. It is named for its distinctive, swollen trunk that resembles the shape of a bottle—an adaptation believed to help the palm store water during dry periods. This eye-catching feature, along with its compact size and tidy appearance, makes it a favorite for tropical and subtropical landscapes as well as container planting.

The Bottle Palm typically grows to a height of 10 to 15 feet, making it suitable for small gardens and decorative planting near patios or entryways. It has four to six graceful, arching fronds with feather-like leaflets that provide a soft contrast to its thick trunk. The palm prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soil. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it is sensitive to cold and should be protected from frost, as temperatures below 30°F (-1°C) can damage or kill the plant. Drought-tolerant once established, the Bottle Palm is not only admired for its sculptural beauty but also for its resilience and adaptability in warm climates.
