Description
The Sapodilla Tree (Manilkara zapota) is a tropical, evergreen fruit tree renowned for its sweet, fragrant, and nutrient-packed fruits. Native to the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of Southeast Asia, this hardy tree has found its way into gardens and orchards around the world, beloved for its delicious chiku fruit.
The fruit is round to oval, with a rough, brown skin and soft, grainy flesh that tastes like brown sugar with hints of pear and honey. The sweet, tropical flavor is perfect for fresh eating, smoothies, desserts, or even in fruit salads. Beyond its flavor, the sapodilla is packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and dietary fiber, offering multiple health benefits.
The Sapodilla Tree is also known for its lush, dark green foliage and its resilience in a variety of climates. It thrives in tropical to subtropical environments and can grow up to 30–50 feet tall, though it can be pruned to maintain a smaller size for home gardens. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and relatively low-maintenance, requiring only occasional watering and well-drained soil.
In addition to its fruit, the tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers and thick, leathery leaves, creating a dense canopy that provides excellent shade and adds ornamental value to any landscape. It also produces a natural latex sap, which has been used historically for various purposes.
