Description

The Hog Plum Tree (Spondias mombin) is a hardy, deciduous tropical tree prized for its flavorful, tangy yellow fruits and its versatility in traditional medicine, culinary uses, and agroforestry. Native to the tropical Americas but now grown widely in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean, this tree produces small, oval-shaped plums that range in color from green to golden yellow when ripe.

The fruit is enjoyed fresh or used in juices, jams, pickles, chutneys, and even fermented beverages. It has a tart, slightly sweet flavor and is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and minerals. Aside from its delicious fruits, many parts of the tree—bark, leaves, and seeds—have traditional medicinal uses, especially in treating inflammation, digestive issues, and infections.

The Hog Plum Tree is well-suited to tropical climates, grows rapidly, and thrives in a variety of soils with minimal care. Its clusters of small, fragrant yellow-white flowers also attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, making it a great addition to food forests or mixed gardens.
