Description

The Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) is a highly valued ornamental tree originating from Asia, renowned for its extended bloom period and vibrant floral displays. Blooming in summer and sometimes into early fall, it produces large, crepe-like flower clusters in a variety of striking colors, including pink, purple, red, and white. Beyond its blooms, the tree is admired for its attractive, exfoliating bark, which reveals a smooth, mottled surface underneath, and for its sculptural, multi-stemmed form. Typically growing between 15 and 25 feet tall, depending on the variety, Crepe Myrtles thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, and are remarkably drought-tolerant once established. They are commonly used as focal points in residential gardens, lining driveways or streets, or planted in groups for a dramatic effect. Crepe Myrtles are relatively low-maintenance but benefit from annual pruning to encourage new growth and enhance flowering. In addition to their beauty, they support local ecosystems by attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. With their combination of vivid color, elegant structure, and adaptability, Crepe Myrtles remain a favorite choice for ornamental planting in temperate to subtropical climates.
