Description
Coffee Fence (Clerodendrum aculeatum), also known as West Indian Privet, is a thorny, evergreen shrub native to the Caribbean and parts of Central America. It earned the name “Coffee Fence” because it has traditionally been planted as a natural barrier or living fence around coffee plantations and agricultural fields, thanks to its dense growth and sharp spines which deter animals and intruders. This hardy plant grows up to 3 meters tall and features small, glossy green leaves and clusters of delicate white flowers that bloom intermittently throughout the year, attracting butterflies and pollinators. Clerodendrum aculeatum is drought-tolerant, thrives in full sun, and adapts well to a variety of soils, making it a low-maintenance option for fencing in tropical and subtropical regions. Though not widely cultivated for ornamental use, its effectiveness as a living fence and its ecological benefits make it valuable in sustainable farming and agroforestry systems.
