Description

Christmas Candle (Senna alata), also known as the Candle Bush or Ringworm Bush, is a fast-growing tropical shrub native to Central and South America. It is widely recognized for its tall, upright spikes of bright yellow flowers that resemble candle flames—especially noticeable during the holiday season in some regions, which is how it got its common name. Senna alata can grow up to 3–5 meters in height and has large, broad, pinnate leaves that fold up at night or during rain. The plant thrives in warm, humid climates and is often found along roadsides, in open fields, or disturbed areas. In addition to its ornamental appeal, it has significant medicinal value: its leaves are used in traditional medicine to treat fungal infections like ringworm and skin conditions. While valued in gardens for its bold color and medicinal uses, it can become invasive in certain tropical regions if not managed properly.
