Description

The Chinese Banyan (Ficus retusa) is a fast-growing, tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia, and closely related to the more commonly known Ficus microcarpa. It is widely admired for its broad, dense canopy, smooth gray trunk, and glossy, oval-shaped leaves that provide lush, year-round greenery. In humid environments, it develops distinctive aerial roots that descend from branches to the ground, helping to support its expanding canopy and giving it a dramatic, ancient-tree appearance. Ficus retusa can grow quite large in open landscapes, making it a popular shade tree in parks, gardens, and urban streetscapes in tropical and subtropical regions. However, it is most famously used in bonsai culture, prized for its thick trunk, shallow root system, and resilience to pruning and shaping. The tree prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, and though hardy, it should be protected from frost. Due to its aggressive roots, it’s best planted away from foundations and paved surfaces. In the right conditions, the Chinese Banyan is both a visually striking and highly adaptable tree.
