Description
Chinaman’s Hat “Orange” (Holmskioldia sanguinea) is an ornamental flowering shrub or climber known for its unique, hat-shaped bracts that surround small tubular flowers. Native to the Himalayan regions and parts of Southeast Asia, this plant gets its common name from the distinctive shape of its bracts, which resemble the conical hats traditionally worn in parts of Asia. The “orange” variety is particularly eye-catching, producing vibrant orange to reddish-orange blooms that attract pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds. It thrives in warm, tropical to subtropical climates and prefers full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Holmskioldia sanguinea can be trained to grow as a shrub or vine and is often used in landscaping for trellises, fences, or garden borders. Though not invasive, it requires regular pruning to maintain shape and promote flowering. Its unusual floral structure and brilliant color make it a standout in ornamental gardens.
