Description
The Chalice Cup Vine (Solandra maxima), also known as Cup of Gold Vine, is a vigorous, evergreen vine native to Mexico and Central America. It is best known for its stunning, trumpet-shaped flowers that can reach up to 20 cm (8 inches) wide. These golden-yellow blooms resemble oversized chalices or goblets, giving the plant its common name. The flowers are highly fragrant, especially in the evening, and have distinctive purple-brown markings inside the throat. Solandra maxima features thick, glossy green leaves and woody stems that can quickly cover fences, arbors, or walls, making it ideal for creating lush, tropical backdrops in warm gardens. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, with moderate water needs. While visually spectacular, all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so care should be taken when planting near pets or children. With its dramatic flowers and rapid growth, the Chalice Cup Vine is a showstopper in tropical and subtropical landscapes.
