Description

The Carambola tree (Averrhoa carambola), often called the starfruit tree due to the fruit’s unique five-pointed star shape when sliced, is a tropical and subtropical species native to Southeast Asia, particularly regions like Malaysia and the Philippines. It typically grows between 15 to 30 feet tall with a rounded canopy and delicate, drooping branches. The tree bears small, pink to lavender flowers throughout the year, followed by clusters of juicy, waxy fruits that range from tart to sweet depending on the variety. Carambola trees prefer full sun, well-drained soil, and are sensitive to frost, making them ideal for USDA zones 10 to 12. Beyond their attractive fruit, which is high in vitamin C and antioxidants, the trees are valued for their ornamental beauty in landscapes. However, the fruit contains oxalic acid and should be consumed with caution by individuals with kidney issues. Widely cultivated in tropical regions around the world, carambola has gained popularity for its unique flavor, aesthetic appeal, and versatility in culinary uses.
