Description

Crescentia cujete, commonly known as the Calabash Tree, is a fascinating and culturally important tree native to the tropical Americas. It is instantly recognizable for its large, spherical, green fruits—often the size of grapefruits or larger—that grow directly from its trunk and main branches, a trait known as cauliflory. While the fruit is not typically eaten due to its hard shell and bitter pulp, it plays a significant role in traditional cultures. Once dried and hollowed, the shells are used to craft utensils like bowls, cups, and ladles, as well as decorative items and musical instruments such as maracas. The tree has glossy, green leaves and bears small, tubular flowers that open at night and are pollinated by bats. It prefers warm, tropical climates with full sun and can tolerate dry conditions once established. Beyond its practical uses, the Calabash Tree is often planted for ornamental or shade purposes and remains an important part of both rural life and folkloric traditions across the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of Africa where it has been introduced.
