Description

Roystonea oleracea, commonly known as the Cabbage Palm or Caribbean Royal Palm, is a stately and fast-growing palm tree native to the Caribbean islands and parts of northern South America. It is one of the tallest of the royal palms, capable of reaching heights over 100 feet, and is admired for its striking silhouette. The tree’s smooth, columnar gray trunk is capped with a prominent, bright green crownshaft from which long, arching, feather-like fronds emerge. The name “Cabbage Palm” refers to the edible, tender terminal bud, or “palm heart,” which was historically harvested—though this practice is now discouraged due to its impact on the tree’s survival. This palm thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and is commonly used in tropical landscaping for avenues, public gardens, and large estate plantings due to its majestic appearance. It is tolerant of coastal conditions, heat, and wind, though it requires regular watering in dry periods. While generally hardy in tropical zones, it does not tolerate cold temperatures and is best suited to frost-free regions.
