Description

Brunfelsia pauciflora, often referred to by its charming common name “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” is a flowering shrub prized for its dramatic, color-changing blooms. Native to Brazil and part of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), this plant produces clusters of fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers that open deep purple on the first day, fade to lavender on the second, and turn white on the third—creating a multicolored display all on one plant. This striking transformation symbolizes the passage of time, hence its evocative name. The plant grows as a dense, bushy shrub, typically reaching 4 to 6 feet in height, and it prefers moist, well-draining soil and a spot with partial shade or filtered sunlight. While it thrives in warm climates, it can be grown in containers and overwintered indoors in cooler zones. In addition to its ornamental appeal, Brunfelsia adds a sweet fragrance to garden spaces, particularly in the evening. However, it’s important to note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, making it unsuitable for gardens with pets or small children.
