Description

The Agave Variegated ‘Century Plant’ (Agave americana var. marginata) is a striking succulent known for its bold, variegated foliage and architectural form. Native to Mexico, it features long, spiny leaves with yellow or cream-colored edges, creating a dramatic contrast with its green center. This agave can grow quite large, reaching up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in height and width, with a rosette shape. Despite its name, the “Century Plant” typically lives for 10-30 years before flowering, at which point it produces a tall flower stalk that can reach up to 15 feet (4.5 meters). After flowering, the plant dies, though it often produces pups (offspring) that continue its legacy. Ideal for dry, sunny landscapes, it’s often used in xeriscaping and ornamental gardens. It’s drought-tolerant but requires well-drained soil to thrive. While the plant’s sharp leaves can be hazardous, it’s prized for its dramatic, spiky appearance.
