Description
Dog Dumpling (Morinda citrifolia), also commonly known as Noni, Indian Mulberry, or Cheese Fruit, is a small evergreen tree or shrub native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. It is widely recognized for its distinctive, knobby fruits and traditional use in folk medicine throughout tropical regions. In the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica, it’s often referred to as Dog Dumpling due to the fruit’s shape and strong odor when ripe.
The tree can reach heights of 10–20 feet and is highly adaptable, growing in coastal, volcanic, and limestone soils. It produces large, glossy green leaves and small, tubular white flowers that bloom year-round, followed by oval, bumpy fruits that turn from green to yellowish-white as they mature. The fruit is known for its pungent smell and bitter taste, often compared to strong cheese—hence one of its nicknames, “cheese fruit.”
