Description
Cryptandra scortechinii, commonly known as the Cotton Bush, is a small, evergreen shrub native to parts of eastern Australia, particularly Queensland and New South Wales. It belongs to the Rhamnaceae family and is typically found growing in dry sclerophyll forests or open woodlands, often on rocky or sandy soils. The plant grows to around one meter tall and features fine, narrow leaves with woolly undersides. Its name comes from the soft, white, cottony appearance of its flower clusters, which bloom primarily from late winter through spring. These distinctive flowers not only add ornamental value but also support local insect populations, including native bees. The Cotton Bush is well-adapted to Australia’s harsh conditions, showing resilience to drought and poor soils, which makes it a suitable choice for native plant gardens and ecological restoration projects. While not widely cultivated, it holds ecological importance in maintaining biodiversity and supporting native ecosystems.
